The school district’s Facebook said, “It is with a heavy heart we share the news of the passing of our beloved teacher, Ms. Dorothy Gerald.

Ms. Gerald was a pillar of West Florence High School for over 40 years. Her dedication and commitment to our students, teachers, and the community will live on in our hearts. The wisdom she shared and her charismatic personality will be greatly missed by all.

It went on to say her “dedication and commitment to our students, teachers, and the community will live on in our hearts. The wisdom she shared and her charismatic personality will be greatly missed by all.”

ABC 15 reached out to West Florence High School Principal Matthew Dowdell for further comment. Along with what was said in the Facebook post, Principal Dowdell sent the following statement:

“We will have grief counselors in our building tomorrow for any students or staff who need someone to mourn with. When more information becomes available about arrangements I will pass it on to everyone. Please keep her family in your thoughts and prayers during this tragic time.

Several people have left comments on the post about Gerald.

A former student commented saying, “One of the best teachers I had when I went to West Florence taught me everything I needed to know about running a family and making some of the best food. You will be missed. Forever in my heart & prayers.”

Another student wrote, “May you Rest In Peace. One of my favorite teachers! I was always her class helper. She was my step team advisor as well! You will be truly missed!”
