Senate Urges Public To Attend Hearings On Redistricting Process

Columbia, S.C. - The South Carolina Senate Redistricting Subcommittee, chaired by Senator Luke Rankin (R-Horry), met to adopt a statewide public hearing schedule to allow public input concerning the 2021 redistricting of South Carolina’s forty-six State Senate and seven U.S. Congressional Districts. The other members of the subcommittee are: Senator Chip Campsen III (R-Charleston), Senator Tom Young Jr. (R-Aiken), Senator Ronnie Sabb (D-Williamsburg), Senator Margie Bright Matthews (D-Colleton), Senator Scott Talley (R-Spartanburg), and Senator Dick Harpootlian (R-Richland). State Senate, House, and Congressional Districts are redrawn every ten years after the census is taken to meet the requirements of federal law. The mission of these public hearings is to receive testimony and gather information about how people see the areas in which they live and what factors need to be considered when the Senate Districts and the Congressional Districts are redrawn.

The public is urged to attend any of the ten public hearings that will be held across the state. All public hearings will be held from 6:30-8:30 pm. Following is the schedule of public hearings:

July 27, Columbia Public Hearing, Gressette Building

July 28, Sumter Public Hearing, Central Carolina Technical College

July 29, Rock Hill Public Hearing, York Technical College

August 2, Greenville Public Hearing, Greenville County Council Chambers

August 3, Florence Public Hearing, Florence-Darlington Technical College

August 4, Beaufort Public Hearing, Technical College of the LowCountry

August 9, Orangeburg Public Hearing, Orangeburg-Calhoun Technical College

August 10, Charleston Public Hearing, Trident Technical College

August 11, Conway Public Hearing, Horry-Georgetown Technical College

August 12, Aiken Public Hearing, Aiken Technical College

All public hearings and subcommittee meetings will be open to the public. Notices of all public hearings and subcommittee meetings will be posted on the South Carolina Legislature’s Senate Redistricting website, http://redistricting.scsenate.gov. The subcommittee will accept in-person, virtual, and written testimony at each of the public hearings.
