Obituary for Martha Porter

Mrs. Martha Ann McKithen Porter, the daughter of Johnny & Martha Coleman McKithen, was born August 5, 1949, in Florence County. On Thursday, December 9, 2021, she entered into eternal rest at McLeod Hospice House.

Martha graduated from Wilson High School in 1967. After graduating she moved to Brooklyn, NY, where she worked for Thomas Publishing Company as a supervising proof-reader. In 1970 she met Thomas Porter, and a year later they wed.

She retired from Thomas Publishing Company in 2000 and moved back to Florence, SC, where she joined her family church: New Zion Baptist Church #1, in Sardis, SC.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her brother, Robert McKithen (Lillie Ashley). Left to cherish her memories are her beloved son, Thomas Sean Porter, two grand-daughters, Jamila Ife Whitney & Myrachal Nahilah Porter, four sisters Fronnie Rose (Clifton Rose - deceased), Nellie Pressley (Joseph Pressley - deceased) of Florence, SC, Agnes James (Will James - deceased) of Irvington, NJ, Patricia Ann McKithen Lilly (John) of Wake Forest, NC., three brothers Charles McKithen (Rosa Cummings-McKithen – deceased), James Willis McKithen (Hilda) of Florence, SC, Ronald McKithen (Linda) of Dallas, Ga. A host of nieces, nephews, cousins, relatives, and friends, four Godchildren, Terrence Thomas, Roland Henry Jr., Justin Willis McKithen, and Brittany Barker.

Obituary for Earlie Mae Coleman

Mrs. Earlie Mae Johnson Coleman was born on July 27, 1939 to the late Earley and Estelle McCall Johnson. She departed this earthly life to enter eternal peace with her Master on Thursday, December 9, 2021.

Mrs. Coleman was educated in the Florence County Public Schools and later received training at T Square.

On June 26, 1965, she married the late Claude W. Coleman, Jr. and to this union six children were born.

Mrs. Coleman was a lifetime member of Mount Tabor Baptist Church in Effingham, South Carolina, where she was a member of the Mass and Gospel Choirs, a Trustee, and served as the Missionary Secretary and Treasurer.

Mrs. Coleman was a Household Technician most of her life, where she served many families. She also was employed with Horne’s Motor Lodge, where she retired, and later was employed part-time with Stokes Eye Clinic.

Mrs. Coleman affectionately known to some as Ma and Grandma, others as Mae, Aunt Earlie, Auntie M. or just plain Earlie Mae answered to all who called because she loved each and every one.

Mrs. Coleman love for people, her beautiful smile, and unique voice will always be remembered.

Mrs. Coleman was preceded in death by her parents, Earley and Estelle McCall Johnson; her oldest child, Kenneth C. Johnson; her youngest child, Brian M. Coleman; and nine siblings.

She leaves to cherish her precious memories: her children, Laura A. Johnson Washington, Claude W. Coleman, III, Wayne A. (Deteria) Coleman, and Linda D. (Bernard) Pyfrom; ten grandchildren; eighteen great grandchildren; two great greatgrandchildren; two sisters, Jessie Mae Brown and Carrielean McLaughlin; and a brother, Rutho (Victoria) Johnson; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.

Obituary for David Lashawn Wilson

Brother David Lashawn Wilson was 42, and departed this life Friday December 10, 2021 in Horry County. He was the son of David Wilson, Teresa Legette Wilson the brother of Wendy Charles. You may visit the family at 207 Georgetown St. Marion.

Funeral services are scheduled to be held at the Henry L. Jackson Memorial Park on Friday December 17, 2021 at 10:00 am. He will be laid to rest at Jackson & Daughters Cemetery. Services will be live-streamed on the Jackson & McGill Facebook Page.

Obituary for Willie Lee Goodman

Mr. Willie Lee Goodman was born on September 16, 1954, in Lamar, South Carolina the beloved son of the late James T. Goodman and Minnie Sims Goodman. Willie received his wings on Monday December 6, 2021, at his residence.

Willie received his formal education in the public schools of Darlington County, graduating from Spaulding High School, Class of 1973. He furthered his education at St. Augustine College in Raleigh, North Carolina.

Willie was preceded in death by his parents along with three brothers Herbert, James, and Carl. Also, a special uncle Marion Goodman.

Willie leaves to cherish his precious memories: his the children, Rhodus Nichols, Chantel Lewis and Willisha Brown; nine grandchildren, Shakiera, Jackie, DeAundray, Alexus, Audrey, Jr., Rhodeana, Jeremy, Malakar, and Rhodus, Jr.; five great grandchildren; three sisters, Helen Jordan, Vivian Goodman and Ernestine Dukes Lowes; a host of nieces, nephews, and a close friend Otis McDaniel.

Obituary for Mr. Ulysses "CEE-DOG" George
Mr. Ulysses George was born in Lamar, South Carolina on February 23, 1949, a son of Minnie Lee Blathers George and the late Alton George, Sr. He entered into his final resting place on Sunday, December 5, 2021 at Medical University Of South Carolina Health- Florence Medical Center, Florence, SC.

He received his formal education in the Darlington County Public School District graduating from Spaulding High School Class of 1969.

Most of his adult life he lived in Columbia, SC where he worked at Shelley’s Ice Company, Days Inn of Columbia. In 1993, he returned home to Lamar, SC where he was united in marriage to Alberta Lewis George. He was employed at Industrial Paving as a Truck Driver where he retired in 2013.

“Cee-Dog”, as he was affectionately called by family and friends, live his life to the fullest. He loved watching his sports. His favorite teams are: South Carolina Gamecocks, Atlanta Falcons and Atlanta Braves. He will be missed by all who knew and loved him.

Survivors left to cherish is memory are: his wife of 28 years, Alberta L. George of the home; two grandchildren: Octavia Davis of Bishopville, SC and Jimmy Davis of Fayetteville, NC; his mother, Minne Lee George; one great grandson, Kingston Davis; a god-son, Torien Carroway; his siblings: Virginia (Allen) Bacote of Darlington, SC, Dr. Mary E. Timmons of Florence, SC, Wesley George, Ronnie George both of Lamar, SC, Alton George, Sr. of Newport News, VA and Anthony C. George of Florence, SC; sisters-in-law, Edell George of Lamar, SC, Rometta Patrick, Oneida Lewis, Velvia Munroe, Darlene Lewis all of New York, Alfreeda Lewis, Carolyn Lattimore, Dianne Spann all of Columbia, SC, Brenda Boyd of Georgia and Arlene Branche of Lamar, SC; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends; his lifelong friend, James “Sonny” Maple of Lamar, SC.

He was preceded in death by: a daughter, Jackie Davis; two sisters: Berthania Dargan and Iva Lee Brunson; a brother, Bubba George; a nephew, Elandus Prince; a brother-in-law, Alvester Lewis and two sisters-in-law: Darlene George and Julia George.

Obituary for Demetre Jadine Battles

On Monday, December 6, 2021 at 4:11pm, God called Demetre’s name. She answered the call and quietly slipped into the arms of her Heavenly Father, where regrets, disappointments, pain, hurt and sorrow no longer exist.

Demetre, the oldest daughter of the late C-MSgt. JD and Bertha Jenkins Battles, was born on June 26, 1953 at Shaw Air Force Base, Sumter, SC and entered eternal rest on December 6, 2021 at McLeod Hospice House in Florence, SC.

She was a 1971 graduate of Sumter High School, and furthered her education at the University of South Carolina, majoring in Sociology. Demetre was on the Spring 1974 charter line of Theta Gamma Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc at USC.

Demetra grew up in Mt. Pisgah AME Church, Sumter, SC, where she was grounded in the Christian Faith. In later years, she became affiliated with Sumter Seventh Day- Adventist Church.

She was employed for many years in Education, Government, and Retail.

Demetre is survived by her sister, Jennifer Battles Jackson of Sumter, SC; an aunt, Vivian Clark Smith of Washington, DC; nephews: Myles Julius (Asia) Jackson, of Houston, TX, Maxx Julian (Chloe) Jackson of Maryville, TN; niece and nephew, Shayla Nicole Battles and Jarryl Dean Battles both of Sumter, SC; grand-nephews: Jayceon Battles of Sumter, Judge Gideon and Justice Samson both of Maryville, TN; grand-niece, Jazmine Battles; brothers, Harold (Henrietta) Fullard of Queens, NY and Johnny (Janet) Williams of Camden, SC; cousins: Adrian (Tim) Fullard Small of Durham, NC, Doris Williams, Alicia (James) Johnson both of Queens, NY, Walter “Chuck” Wilson of Sumter, SC, Carla and Craig Chandler (goddaughter) of Sumter, SC, Mandrielle (Melanie) Judith Davis of Augusta, GA; brother-in-law, Charles Howard (Elouise) Jackson; sister-in-law, Aretha Wright and many other relatives and friends.

Obituary for Alyssa Tremaine Farmer

Alyssa Tremaine Farmer was born to her devoted parents Joe Sanders and Hermina Farmer on May 25, 1984. She entered into eternal rest on December 1, 2021, at the age of 37. She was profoundly known as “Lei” to family, friends, and several others.

Her education began in Walterboro, South Carolina. She obtained her High School Diploma from Cornerstone Christian Correspondence School in 2002.

Alyssa’s Christian walk started with her grandmother, Emma Farmer, at Rock of Ages CME Church. She later became a member of Power of Faith Deliverance Ministry. Alyssa rededicated her life to Christ on November 30, 2021. She was a loving mother, friend, and a strong believer in Christ. To know Alyssa was to love Alyssa. She was the life of the party and was guaranteed to make you laugh. She always left with “I love you.”

At an early age, Alyssa pursued a passion for cosmetics. Later in life, she gained an interest in cooking, which led her to host several holiday dinners and cookouts, that always included seafood, specifically crabs.
Alyssa was raised in the home with her cousins, Kellie Shelton, Justin Farmer, Natasha Farmer, Sonya Grant, Danielle Mele, and Stanley Morrison, Jr. who were more like her siblings. They all shared a special bond and were taught to stick by one another no matter what.

She was preceded in death by her grandparents, Minister Emma Farmer, Herman Farmer, Corrie-Bell, and Malachai Sanders; one brother, Troy Mitchell; one niece, Adriana Farmer; cousin, Justin Farmer; three aunts, Louise, Kristina and Pauline Sanders; five uncles, Malachai Jr., Willie Jack, Adolph, Elliot Sanders and Wesley Youmans.
