Obituary for Albertha Elizabeth McCullum
Albertha Elizabeth Lincoln McCullum was born on February 18, 1923, in Dorchester County, South Carolina, a daughter of the late Maggie and Eugene Lincoln. She was born the ninth child out of ten children. She received her formal education in Dorchester County, South Carolina. On February 22, 2022, God decided that her job here on earth had been completed.
At a young age, she met and married Wesley “Dixie” McCullum. They would settle down in Lamar, South Carolina, where they raised their daughter Glenda “BaBa” McCullum Jenkins.
“Bert” as she was affectionately known was a faithful and devoted member of John Wesley United Methodist Church for over 75 years. She served on the usher board as well as the women’s choir. Bert was also a faithful member of Faithful Workers Chapter #229 since its inception over 50 years ago. She was also a faithful member of the Independent Royal and Lady Knights for a number of years. For over 44 years, she worked in the Darlington County School System for 44 years as a cafeteria worker at Lamar High School.
My grandmother had several favorite hobbies that she enjoyed doing. Sewing was definitely her favorite. Growing up, I would remember her in the living room doing her sewing. She also enjoyed going to the Center every day to do some knitting as well. She would always knit me a blanket and I still have them. Ma also loved making her own peanut brittle as well as doing her puzzles books. Growing up, we would always make sure that on Saturday nights, we watched one of her favorite shows, The Golden Girls. We never missed an episode of Murder She Wrote or Columbo, along with other shows.
To know Bert was to love her. She never had a bad word to say about anyone. I saw her get mad or curse at anyone. No matter what your age was she would always show respect to you. My grandmother had a genuine and pure heart. She always made sure that my sister and I had what we needed. One of my fondest memories of my grandmother was when she had Rick call me after I got off work with a special request. She wanted me to stop and get her some Red Wine. I said, “Ma, why do you want wine,” she replied, “It’s good for my heart”. One of her favorite lines after talking to Rick and me was “that’s right”.
In 2019, Ma suffered her second stroke, in which she didn’t want to live with me in Baltimore and I certainly refused to her in a nursing home, but then out of nowhere an angel named Christine “Coolie” Brown stepped and agreed to take care of her without me even asking. Bert loved being in her company and vice versa. I guess my mother, Glenda really picked a good friend when she chose her. She would remain under Christine’s care until her death.
Bert was preceded in death by her late husband Wesley “Dixie” McCullum, her daughter, Glenda “BaBa” McCullum Jenkins, and granddaughter, Diane Coretha McCullum Williams, and nine siblings.
She leaves to cherish her memories include her granddaughter, La’Tonya (Rick) Michelle Wilson; two grandsons, Perryn N. Williams, and Ricky “RJ” Wilson, Jr.; one devoted and special friend/family member, Christine “Coolie” Brown and Mrs. Ethel Lee Bess; a host of nieces, nephews, and other relatives.
