Mary Cooper

September 12, 1937 - April 28, 2022

Ms. Mary "Valco" Cooper, daughter of the late Handy Grant and Odelsia Cooper, departed this life at 8:07pm on April 28, 2022, at the Heritage Home of Florence, South Carolina. She was born on September 12, 1937, in Marion County.

She became a member of the House of God Keith Dominion Church Pamplico under the leadership of the late State Elder Elijah Green.

From her wit to her sense of humor, she was known for being the Florence News before WBTW. Val never met a stranger. To know her was to love her.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Handy Grant, Odelsia Cooper-Bacote, and Vander Bacote; two sisters, Ina Dennis and Pecolia C. Williams; one brother, Willie Bacote; and one daughter, Catherine Grant Robinson.

She leaves fond memories to her daughters, B.J. Swaringer of Lexington Park, Maryland, Rhonda C. Grice of Florence, South Carolina, and Sharon Conner of Winder, Georgia; and two honorary children, Rufus (Ashley) Bratton and Martha (William) Ralston; two sisters: Pearly (John) Keith of Pamplico, South Carolina and Suelene Guiles of Effingham, South Carolina; two brothers: Vander Bacote of Florence, South Carolina and James Marshall Bacote of Lexington, South Carolina; seven grandchildren, Cathy Joe McLaughlin-Spates of Winston-Salem, North Carolina, Andre D. Swaringer of Florence, South Carolina, Dennis L. (Valerie) Swaringer. Sr. of Lexington Park, Maryland, Jo Celia (Brian) Cager of Winston-Salem, North Carolina, Jaime (Armand) Poole of Winder, Georgia, Mitchell Rondreaus Grice of Norfolk, Virginia, and Jonathan (Lindsay) Conner of Katy, Texas; seventeen great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; one grand-pup, “Sasha;” and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives, and special friends.

Ernest Cuffie

December 3, 1936 - May 2, 2022

It is with profound sorrow we announce the transition of Mr. Ernest Cuffie, 85, of 10404 Hugue Way, Charlotte, North Carolina formerly of Hartsville, South Carolina, who entered into eternal rest on Monday, May 2, 2022, after an illness. Funeral arrangements are pending and will be announced later by Hines Funeral Home, Inc. of Hartsville. The family has asked that all inquiries about visitation be made to Hines Funeral Home. Daisy Bell Green

October 26, 1926 - April 30, 2022

On April 30, 2022 after a long illness God saw his servant getting tired-He opened up the flow gates of Heaven and said” Thou Good and faithful servant,” I know you are tired, Come on Home.”

On October 26, 1926, God blessed the late Elease Eaddy Graham and the late Reverend Laury Douglas Graham with a beautiful baby girl, Daisy Bell. She attended Lake City Colored School, Lake City, SC. She was a lifelong member and faithful member of Mt. Clair Missionary Baptist Church. She received a plaque from Deep River Community as the oldest person in the community. She read her bible daily and loved to knit and make quilts. Her favorite thing was making chocolate and jelly cakes. Everyone in the community would come by to get their cake.

She was united in marriage to the late Walker Green, Sr. Six children were born from that union. Those who preceded her in death were her parents, her children: Charles Green, Debra Green Cooper, Vasil Green, and several sister and brothers. Throughout her life she worked faithfully as a caregiver for numerous people. She was well known as the mother in the community and church.

Surviving to cherish her memory is her loving daughter, Sarah Green of Freehold, New Jersey, two sons, Willie Green and Badi Muhammad of Brooklyn, New York. Walker Green, Jr. Lake City, South Carolina, and Robert McClam of Scranton, South Carolina. Ten grandchildren, Six Great Grandchildren, Six great great grand children. Four sisters: Fannie Fulmore, Neomi Graham, Elemena Frison of Lake City, South Carolina and Lil Graham, Fayetteville, North Carolina. Three bothers: Hosea (Ammie) Graham, Johnsonville, South Carolina, Amos (Mary)Graham, Lake City, South Carolina and Doublin (Wanda) Graham, Spring Lake, North Carolina. Special caregivers: Loving son, Walker Green, Jr. and grandson Justin Green who took care of her during her illness. Two grandson she reared as her own: Vasil Green deceased and Stanly Green of Brooklyn, New York. Two faithful friends: Marilyn Barr Brown and Jennie Graham.

Carrie Benton Brock

May 12, 1937 - April 26, 2022

“For now I am ready to be offered and the time of my departure is at hand. I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith, henceforth, there is laid up for me a crown of righteousness which the Lord, the righteous Judge, shall give me at that day; and not to me only, but unto allthem also that love His appearing.” II Timothy 4:6-8

Mrs. Carrie Mae Benton Brock was born in Darlington, South Carolina on May 12, 1937 a daughter of the late Leroy Benton, Sr. and Jessie Mae Joseph Benton. She departed this life on Tuesday, April 26, 2022 at Commander Nursing Center, Florence, SC.

She received her formal education in the Darlington County Public School graduating from Mayo High School Class of 1956. She continued her education at Betty Stevenson’s Cosmetology School and received her Cosmetology License.
She was employed at Georgia Pacific (Dixie Cup) retiring after over 30 years.
At an early age, she attended Mt. Zion Baptist Church and later she became a life member of Round-O Missionary Baptist Church.

Carrie was united in marriage to the late Willie James Brock.

She was preceded in death by: her daughter, Kathy “Peaches” M. Benton; one sibling: James Walter “Sonny Boy” Benton, Sr.

Those left to cherish her memory are: three brothers: Lessie (Bertie Mae) Joseph of Darlington, SC, Leroy (Fosteen) Benton, Jr. and Thomas Daniel Benton both of Winston-Salem, NC; an aunt, Anna Sue Benton of Darlington, SC; a special niece and sole caregiver, Beverly Robinson of Florence, SC; several other nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Raymond David Anderson II

August 22, 1961 - April 25, 2022

Brother Raymond Anderson II departed this life Monday, April 25, 2022, in Tampa, Florida. He was the son of the late Raymond David Anderson Sr and Katie Simmons, and brother of Burma Anderson, Katie Anderson, Diego Anderson, Segi Simmons, and the late JohnnyLee Levon Simmons.

Public viewing will be Thursday May 5, 2022, 12:00 noon-7:00 pm at the Jackson McGill Memorial Chapel.

Graveside services are scheduled to be held at St. James AME Church Cemetery on Friday May 6, 2022 at 10:00 am. Services will be live-streamed on the Jackson & McGill Facebook Page.

The family of Brother Raymond Anderson II in consideration of the current health crisis facing our world, nation, state, and local community, will hold a 100 person or less funeral service for their loved one with interment immediately following. While the Anderson family would love to be surrounded by your presence, they acknowledge the health risks to family, church members, friends, and particularly to those who are most vulnerable to this disease, the elderly, and those with chronic health conditions. A celebration of life for Deacon Samuel Knox, Jr., will be held accordingly. Mary Ruth Felder Moten, 80, widow of Walter Moten, Sr., and daughter of the late Willie Felder, Sr., and Viola Bracey Felder, was born on May 27, 1941 in Sumter, SC. She departed this life on Tuesday, May 03, 2022 at Prisma Health Tuomey in Sumter, SC.

Tommy Lee Jackson

April 14, 1968 - April 29, 2022

It is with heartfelt sorrow that the management and staff of Mitchell-Josey Funeral Home, Inc. and members of the Jackson family announces the passing of Mr. Tommy Lee Jackson of Darlington, SC. Jackson, as he was affectionately called, passed on Friday evening, April 29, 2022 following a sudden illness.
