Jonathan McDaniel Jr. March 19, 1951 - August 24, 2022

Mr. Jonathan "Boochie" McDaniel Jr., was born March 19, 1951, in Florence County, SC, a son of Dorothy Comelia Jackson McDaniel and the late Jonathan McDaniel Sr.

He transitioned to his new life on Wednesday, August 24, 2022, at home.

He was educated in the public schools of Florence County. He graduated from Southside High School, Class of 1968. He received a Bachelor of Arts in History from Vorhees College, Denmark, South Carolina in 1973.

Jonathan worked for the SC Department of Juvenile Justice and Union Carbide as an Inspector of Quality Control. He was a former member of the Masonic Order and Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity Inc.

Jonathan was preceded in death by his father, Jonathan Sr., and his brother, Herbert McDaniel.

He leaves to cherish his memories a daughter, Jasmine McDaniel-Prescott (Tyric Prescott), mother, Dorothy J. McDaniel; sisters Joan (Nicholas) Myers, Luida McCall; brother, Reginald “Reggie” Allard (Dana) McDaniel; grandchildren, Wessyn Prescott, and Kannyn Prescott; aunts, Clemmie Williams, Gladys Pigatt, Miriam Fred, Betty McDaniel; nieces, nephews, sisters-in-law, brothers-in-law, and a host of other relatives and friends.

May Thelma Batchelor May 1, 1937 - August 28, 2022

May Thelma Batchelor, 85, of Florence, SC, passed away on Sunday, August 28, 2022.
Ms. Batchelor was born the daughter of the late Lillian Frances Wheeler Robinson and Francis George Robinson. She was a member of St. John’s Church.

In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her husband, John Edwin Batchelor; sister, Edwina Enair and her brothers, Ernest, Bud, Stuart and Leslie Robinson.

Ms. Batchelor is survived by her sons, Edward (Cheryl) Batchelor of St. Louis, MO and Brian Alan (Leah) Batchelor of Grande Prairie, Alberta; daughter, Val (Jim) Batchelor Gleason of Florence; seven grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; brothers, Ronnie Robinson of Salisbury, NC and Carl Robinson of Amherst, Nova Scotia.

Memorial Service will be held in the Parish Hall at St. John’s Church at 2:00 PM on Saturday, September 10, 2022, directed by Stoudenmire-Dowling Funeral Home.

The family will receive friends from 1:00 PM – 2:00 PM in the Poynor Room.

Emma Henry October 9, 1932 - August 22, 2022

Mrs. Emma Henry departed this earthly life and entered eternal life on August 22, 2022. She was born on October 9, 1932 in Timmonsville, South Carolina. She was the daughter of the late Toby and Christine Lowery.

Mrs. Emma received a public education in addition to assistance from educator (Retired) Frances Kate Haynesworth.

Mrs. Emma was employed at Pee Dee Mental Health until her retirement. Additionally, she was a caregiver for the Wilcox family.

Mrs. Emma confessed Jesus Christ as her Lord and Savior at an early age. She was a faithful member of Mount Sinai Holiness Church in which she served in the following auxiliaries of Sunday Preschool Teacher, Usher, Missionary, Pastor’s Aide, Gospel and Senior Choir member.

Mrs. Emma was joined in holy matrimony to the late Ivory Henry, Sr. To this union they were blessed with six children.

Mrs. Emma was preceded in death by her mother, Christine Lowery; father, Toby Lowery; husband, Ivory Henry, Sr.; two children, Bishop Christopher R. (Elizabeth) Henry and JoAnne Green; a grandchild, Ivory Henry, III; a great-grandson, Cameron Montgomery; and three siblings, Hattie Cade, Marion Bines, and Moses Lowery.

Mrs. Emma Elizabeth Henry leaves to cherish loving memories: her children, Stanley Henry, Cherry Gail (Elijah) Tindal, Teresa (Yul) Harley, Ivory (Shirley Ann) Henry, Jr., and Alice Flemming (loved as a daughter), three special children raised like her own, Lila, Lynn, and Whit Wilcox; special nephew, James Cade of Florence, South Carolina; nineteen grandchildren to include Demosio Douglas, Tony Felder, Mario Williams, Tyrone Felder, Kimber Felder, Fonya Charles, Tianeka Henry-Croker, Kimberly Michelle Felder, JaWanna Henry, Ashley Ervin, Krystal Tindal, Shanavor Montgomery, KayLa Tindal, LaTonya Henry, Rachelle Henry, Grayson Harley, Chanel Henry, Brandilyn “Bri” Wright, and Terrelle Harley; a sister, Dorothy George of Florence, South Carolina; a sister-in-law Cora Lee Henry of Florence, South Carolina; one son-in-law, Anthony Green of Florence, South Carolina; forty-eight great-grandchildren; three great-greatgrandchildren; and a host of special grandchildren, nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.

Ernest Joseph Lair February 2, 1948 - August 26, 2022

Ernest Joseph Lair, 74, of Florence, SC, passed away on Friday, August 26, 2022. He was born in Medford, Wisconsin to the late Ernest David and Loretta Pankratz Lair. Mr. Lair was proud to have served his country in the US Air Force. After his military service he earned his Master’s Degree and was a professor at Florence-Darlington Technical College and Williamsburg Technical College. He was a member of the History Fraternity at Francis Marion University. He played semi-professional football in Chicago with the Burwin Barrons and he played football in the military as well. Mr. Lair always considered his greatest accomplishment was marrying his wife, Martha. He enjoyed gardening and was considered a jack of all trades.

Surviving is his wife, Martha McGregor Lair; son, Derek Lair; daughter, Shauna Lair; and a brother, Harold Lair.

A graveside service with military honors, directed by Cain Calcutt Funeral Home, will be held at 1:00 PM on Tuesday, August 30, 2022 at Florence National Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6:00 PM until 8:00 PM on Monday, August 29, 2022 at Cain Calcutt Funeral Home.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society.

John Cleveland Smith January 8, 1951 - August 25, 2022

Brother John C. Smith was 71, and departed this life Thursday August 25, 2022 in Marion County. He was the husband of Annie Smith. You may visit the family at 118 A Hampton Circle, Mullins.

Funeral services are scheduled to be held at the House of God Church, Zion Community on Friday September 2, 2022 at 1:00 pm. He will be laid to rest at Hillcrest Memorial Garden, Mullins. Services will be live-streamed on the Jackson & McGill Facebook Page.

The family of Brother John C. Smith in consideration of the current health crisis facing our world, nation, state, and local community, will hold a 100 person or less funeral service for their loved one with interment immediately following. While the Smith family would love to be surrounded by your presence, they acknowledge the health risks to family, church members, friends, and particularly to those who are most vulnerable to this disease, the elderly, and those with chronic health conditions.

Bobby Lane April 1, 1964 - August 24, 2022

Bobby Lane, 58, of Florence, SC, passed away on Wednesday, August 24, 2022. He was born in Dillon, SC, a son of the late James Robert Lane and Dessie Virginia "Ginny" Watford. In addition to his parents, he is predeceased by a sister, Amy Lane. Bobby worked in construction until he became disabled. He loved sports, especially the Clemson Tigers, the Dallas Cowboys and the LA Dodgers. He also enjoyed playing pool and fishing.

Surviving is his son, Devin Carraway of Effingham; daughter, Holly Lane of Florence; three brothers, Joey Watford (Angie) of Florence, Jimmy Watford (Christina) of Coward and Patrick Watford (Tina) of Florence; sister, Kammy Benton (Rick) of Timmonsville; grandson, Braeson Carraway of Effingham; stepfather, Joseph C. Watford; special friend, Kelly Hall; and several nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held at 3:00 PM on Saturday, September 3, 2022, in the Cain Calcutt Funeral Home Chapel with an Inurnment to follow in the Mount Hope Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 2:00 PM until 3:00 PM at the funeral home prior to the service.

Zadie Ree Gray January 25, 1945 - August 26, 2022

A celebration of life for Ms. Zadie Ree Gray will be held accordingly: Public visitation and viewing will be held on Tuesday, August 30, 2022, from 2 PM to 6 PM at the Hines Funeral Home, 833 South Sixth Street, Hartsville, South Carolina 29550.

The homegoing service will be held on Wednesday, August 31, 2022, at 2 PM at the Darlington Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses at 513 Gilchrist Road, Darlington, South Carolina 29532. Masks are required during all of these services. Memorial tributes may be posted at www.hinesfuneralhome.com.

Allen C. Hickson August 26, 2022

Allen C. Hickson, 80 passed away on Friday, August 26, 2022.

Funeral services will be Wednesday, August 31, 2022 at 3:00 p.m. in the chapel of Layton-Anderson Funeral Home. Visitation will begin at 2:00 p.m. at the funeral home before the service. Burial will follow at Florence Memorial Gardens. The family will be at 1113 E. McIver Road, Darlington, SC at other times.

Mr. Hickson was born in Florence County, the son of the late Evander and Oline Oliver Hickson. He worked in the auto industry as a parts salesman.

He was married to the late Virginia Britt Hickson.

Surviving are his son, Carl (Cindy) Hickson; two daughters, Tara (Kenneth) Todd, Tammy (Robby) Wilkerson; two brothers Carl Daniel Hickson, Darrell (Gerry) Hickson; two sisters, Mary Kelly and Grace Watford; eleven grandchildren, Blake and Matthew Joye, Heather Holloway, Brittany Smith, Hunter Jordan, McKenzie Jordan, Kaitlyn Wilkerson, Kortney Wilkerson, Madison Wilkerson, Christopher Todd, Phillip Todd and ten great-grandchildren.
