Tidelands Health Participates in National ‘Match Day’ Announcing Next Residency Class

March 27, 2023

St. Patrick’s Day was indeed a lucky day for Tidelands Health and eight graduating medical students from across the country.

The highly anticipated “Match Day” in the medical community coincided with the holiday Friday, when residency programs throughout the country announced the applicants who have been accepted into their next class.

Eight graduating medical students were selected to participate in the Tidelands Health MUSC Family Medicine Residency Program, a three-year program that provides clinical training and education to cultivate the next generation of physicians.

“Match Day is an exciting moment not only for these applicants who will make up our next residency class but also for everyone involved with our Tidelands Health MUSC Family Medicine Residency Program,” program director Dr. Mike Malone said. “It’s a special day. We definitely feel lucky to have such a talented and passionate group joining our program. We congratulate and celebrate with them today and look forward to welcoming them in June.”

Residency applicants in their final year of medical school eagerly await “Match Day” in March when the National Resident Matching Program announces where applicants will pursue their residency training. Students apply to residency programs and go through an interview process, with the applicants and the programs confidentially ranking each other. The National Resident Matching Program then uses a computerized mathematical algorithm to match applicants with residency programs. The results are announced on “Match Day.”

Tidelands Health leaders, current residents and faculty gathered at the residency program’s headquarters at Tidelands Health Medical Park at Holmestown Road on Friday to announce the next class and celebrate the future residents’ upcoming arrival.

The next class of residents: Amber Bartelle, University of South Carolina School of Medicine-Columbia; Kelly Coyman, Lincoln Memorial University-DeBusk College of Osteopathic Medicine; Madison Hoover, Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine; Keswick Lo, University of South Carolina School of Medicine-Columbia; Shelby McGee, Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine; Alec Sikarin, University of Illinois College of Medicine-Rockford; Mitchell Thomas, West Virginia School of Osteopathic Medicine, and Taylor Wilding, Pacific Northwest University of Health Sciences College of Osteopathic Medicine.

The Tidelands Health MUSC Family Medicine Residency Program is part of Tidelands Health’s multi-pronged strategy through its McRoy and Jo Skipper Initiative for Learning and Teaching to invest in and help develop future health care professionals and leaders to serve the fast-growing region. After completing the residency program, many physicians have stayed with Tidelands Health and are seeing patients in the health system’s family medicine locations.

Earlier this year, Tidelands Health was honored nationally for its culture supporting the residency program by being named a finalist for the DeWitt C. Baldwin Jr. Award given by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education. The health system was selected as one of just three finalists from more than 850 ACGME-accredited sponsoring institutions around the country.

“Being selected as a finalist is a testament to the residents, faculty, staff, administrative team and all who interact and work with the residents at Tidelands Health,” Dr. Malone said.
