Benedict Rally Falls Short Against Spring Hill
COLUMBIA, S.C. – Benedict College staged a ninth-inning rally, but came up short as Spring Hill College held on for a 7-5 victory in a SIAC baseball game on Sunday at Tiger Field.
Spring Hill swept the three-game series to improve to 27-18 overall and 25-4 in the SIAC. Benedict falls to 13-19 overall and 8-17 in the SIAC.
The Badgers had a 7-0 lead heading into the bottom of the ninth inning. Jamell Mitchell Jr. led off the bottom of the ninth by reaching on a Spring Hill throwing error after laying down a bunt. Jacob Hall walked and Taj Bates was hit by a pitch with one out to load the bases. Another Spring Hill error allowed Mitchell to score. Jalen McDuffie had a single to bring home Hall and Fareed Mizelle, one of three Benedict seniors honored before the game, followed with an infield single to bring home Bates. Pinch-hitter Jayden Jones hit a sharp single up the middle to score two runs to make it 7-5. A strikeout and a fielder's choice ended Benedict's rally.
The Tigers were held to four hits through the first eight innings, before notching three hits in the ninth. Mizelle had two hits.
The Tigers close out the season with a three-game SIAC series at Kentucky State next weekend, with a doubleheader on Saturday.
