Sumter County Sheriff’s Office’s Lieutenant James Dukes and Sergeant JoQuanda Hunter are joined by interested candidates from Sumter, Crestwood, Lakewood, and Lee Central High Schools during the Graduate to Greatness event held at the Sumter County Civic Center last week.

The Sumter County Sheriff’s Office’s booth was a popular stop for the talented seniors attending the Second Annual Graduate to Greatness at the Sumter County Civic Center. Lieutenant James Dukes and Sergeant JoQuanda Hunter interviewed numerous interested candidates from Sumter, Crestwood, Lakewood, and Lee Central High Schools.

Lieutenant Dukes and Sergeant Hunter were excited to meet many outstanding young people who could potentially make up the next generation of deputies at the Sheriff’s Office. When asked about his impressions of the event, Lieutenant Dukes said, “My experience with Graduate to Greatness was far from the typical career fair where traditionally we’re seeking out candidates to join our team. The roles were greatly reversed, and the students came there with a mission in mind, and they were actively seeking to begin a career with our agency by way of our Detention Center.”

“Sgt. Hunter and I thoroughly enjoyed ourselves as we engaged with so many confident energetic students. We love pouring into everyone but especially our youth because they are indeed our future. Hats off to Mrs. Williams and Mrs. Gardner for the roles that they both played to make this event such a success,” he added.

Erika Williams is with Sumter Economic Development and TheLink Economic Development Allizce. Brenda Gardner is the Regional Workforce Advisor at the South Carolina Department of Commerce.

Motivations for seeking a career in law enforcement vary from person to person. As one might expect, some seek the satisfaction of being a part of an organization devoted to serving and protecting the public, while others admire the courage and professionalism of being a Sheriff’s Deputy, and the job security, salary, and benefits.
