The string of vehicle break-ins by a pair of Sumter men has ended. In recent months, dozens of Sumter County residents discovered their vehicles damaged and their belongings stolen. The Sumter County Sheriff’s Office has in custody the second of two suspects believed to have been responsible for the vehicle break-ins and thefts, one of whom shot at a resident who interrupted them as they were preparing to break into the homeowner’s vehicle.

Investigators believe that on April 12, 2023, at approximately 3:00am suspects, Quavez Young and Jatori Burgess were preparing to break into a vehicle when the resident was alerted by his security system. When the victim surprised the suspects, investigators allege Burgess fired several rounds at him as they fled.

Investigators who had been gathering evidence on area vehicle break-ins for months added the evidence gathered from the attempted murder and identified the suspect in the attempted murder as Jatori Avont Burgess.

The first suspect to be apprehended was Young. Investigators arrested him on May 11, 2023, and transported him to the Sumter County Detention Center, where a judge denied his bond, and he is awaiting trial.

A week later, on Thursday, May 18, 2023, The United States Marshal Service Carolina Regional Fugitive Task Force and Sumter County Deputies encircled a Rembert area home and took Burgess into custody. Investigators believe Burgess to be the shooter at the April 12 incident.

Sheriff Anthony Dennis said, “We applaud the deputies and investigators on these arrests. As a lifetime resident of Sumter County, I take it personally whenever our Sumter County neighbors are the victim of a crime.”

When asked about the persistence and patience required of deputies and investigators to stay at their work even though some cases take longer to resolve, Sheriff Dennis said, “We never give up. Our people are always working behind the scenes, even though the public may be unaware. From our deputies on patrol to our Community Action Team (CAT), and investigators, our team would not quit, and the arrests have rewarded them for their hard work."

The arrest of Young and Burgess is the result of a combined effort of local law enforcement that included our partners at the Sumter Police Department and the United States Marshall’s Task Force who were instrumental in the investigation and resolution of this case.

Jatori Avont Burgess is at The Sumter County Sheriff’s Office Detention Center, where he is held without bond.
