*Obituary for Daisy Bell Marshall*

Mrs. Daisy Bell Gattison Marshall, the daughter of the late Henry and Lillie White Gattison was born July 26, 1933 in Chesterfield County, South Carolina. She departed this earthly life on Wednesday, July 21, 2021.

She received her formal education through the Chesterfield County Public School System.

Mrs. Daisy Bell was devoted a member of Ousley Missionary Baptist Church.

Those left to cherish her loving memories: a son, Robert E. Gattison, Sr. (Margaret), four grandchildren, Robert Gattison, Jr. (Angie), Priscilla Michelle Gattison, James Louis Gattison, and Henry Kelley Gattison; five great grandchildren, Chavez Gattison, Trey Gattison, Tyquez Gattison, Rod’Darius Gattison, and Jordon Gattison; one great great-grandchild, Tylin Jamal Gattison; and a host of nephews, nieces, brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, cousins, other relatives, and friends.

*Obituary for Lubertha Hines*

Mrs. Lubertha “Bay” Smalls Hines, the daughter of the late Johnny Smalls and Mary McCants Smalls was born December 17, 1937 in Florence, South Carolina. She left this life to return to the open arms of her Creator on Wednesday, July 21, 2021.

As a small child, “Bay” as she was affectionately called, was educated at Salem School in Claussen, South Carolina and later graduated from Wilson High School as a Class of 1956 graduate.

On August 8, 1959 “Bay” and the late Robert “Jay” Hines, Jr. were united in holy matrimony.

At an early age, Bay was determined not to be a domestic worker, therefore, shortly after marriage, Bay and Jay became a part of the Great Migration and relocated to Bronx, New York seeking better opportunities. However years later, Bay and Jay returned to Florence, South Carolina. Bay gained employment with Lazy Boy East. She retired in 1999 after thirty-two years of service.

Bay gave her life to Christ and joined Salem United Methodist Church in the Claussen Community, where she served faithfully as a member of the Senior, Mass, and Young Adult Choirs. She also served in many other capacities of the church, which are as follows: Church Musician, member of the Trustee Board, Pastoral Parish Committee, Council on Ministries, Church Van Ministry, and Culinary Staff.

Bay was also one of the founders of Salem’s first annual Family and Friends Day, Annual Activity Day, helped organize the first annual Church Anniversary, Home Coming, Fundraisers to pave the church grounds, purchase the parsonage, and the vans. She was one of the founding members of the S & E Concert Choir and was a member for many years and served as an Advisor to the Choir as well. Even as her health declined, she still lifted her voice in song. You could hear her singing, playing the piano, and singing throughout the halls of Southland Health Care Center.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Johnny and Mary McCants Smalls; and her husband, Robert “Jay” Hines, Jr.,

Lubertha leaves to cherish her precious members: two daughters, Alyssa (Derrick) Sparks of the home and Debra Cain of Florence, South Carolina; three sons, Ronnie Cain of Florence, South Carolina, Wilbert “Duke” Cain, and Daniel (Reverend Earlena) Harrison of Florence, South Carolina; six grandchildren, Jaden A. Bethea of Lubbock, Texas, Jaiden Sparks and Jason Sparks both of the home, Salathiel Harrison, Seth Harrison, and Stephen Harrison all of Florence, South Carolina; two special nephews, Brian (Neva) Bailey and Herbert (Nicole) Goodman; two special nieces, Tanya Bailey and Inez Goodman; five sisters-in-law, Margie Hines, Shirley Johnson, Mary Aikens, Martha Spears, and Theola Jones; god-children, Scherelle (James) McElveen, Patricia Kelley, Carol James Keith, and James (Annie) Hines; best friend, Lizzie Thomas; childhood friends, Olin and Annie James; and a host of nephews, nieces, other relatives, extended church family, and friends..

Hermena Hickson Swinton of Florence died Tuesday, July 20, 2021 at her residence after an illness. Arrangements will be announced by Smith Funeral Home of Florence, LLC.

*Obituary for Mable T. Burgess*

The Legacy of a daughter, wife, mother, grandmother, Community Leading Lady, Co-Owner of Lawson Street Grocery also known as Grady Store, and Phenomenal Woman of God was born January 1, 1924 to the late Nathaniel and Louvenia Brown Taylor.

Mrs. Mable T. Burgess, 97, the wife of the late Grady Burgess, Sr. answered and followed God’s voice into eternal rest in His loving arms on Friday, July 16, 2021 at 11:59 PM.

She received her formal education through the Public School System in Florence, South Carolina.

Mrs. Burgess has been a part of the parish of New Ebenezer Baptist Church for numerous years and was a faithful member, until her health declined.

Mrs. Mable was preceded in death by her parents, Nathaniel and Louvenia Brown Taylor; her husband, Grady Burgess, Sr.; a son, Leon Burgess; two granddaughters, TyAnita “Danah” Burgess and Hillary F. Davis; and three brothers, Frank Taylor, Willie Taylor, and Lester Taylor.

Mrs. Mable T. Burgess leaves with us to cherish her Legacy: two sons, Elder Grady, Jr. (Bessie) Burgess of Columbia, South Carolina and Lawrence (Beverly) Burgess of Florence, South Carolina; five daughters, Elsie (Harry) McFadden of Columbia, South Carolina, Missy (Tony) Planter, Juanita Burgess, and Mary Burgess all of Florence, South Carolina, and Dora Scott of Timmonsville, South Carolina; eleven grandchildren; thirteen great-grandchildren; three great great-grandchildren; two sisters, Theola James and Essie Taylor both of Florence, South Carolina; two special sons, Julius Williams and Roy Solomon; a special cousin, Luler Mae Davis; and a host nephews, nieces, other relatives, and dear friends.

*Obituary for Willie Lee Davis*

Willie Lee “Dove” Davis was born November 9, 1946, in Bel Air, Maryland. He was the son of the late Miller Davis and Elizabeth Hammonds Davis. He departed this life on Saturday, July 17, 2021, in a local hospital after an illness.

“Dove” as he was affectionately called by family and friends was a proud graduate from Wilson Senior High School and served as a member of the Wilson Athletic Booster Club, and active Alumni of Wilson Class of 1967. He was formerly employed with Clemson Research and Education Center. Willie was a huge fan of Wilson’s football and basketball teams, so much so that he attended every game rain or shine. He also enjoyed watching old westerns and drinking Starbucks. He was also known as the “Grill Extraordinaire”. He was a kindhearted man and would go out of his way to help others.

In addition to his parents, he was predeceased in death by his brother, Dwight Davis.

Left to cherish his precious memories include his wife, Alliree Davis; children, Ronta (Seggee) Davis, Argaria (Rev. Bobby, Jr.) Young, Armando Echols, and Tanya (Eric) Echols-Baker; seven grandchildren; Psalm Davis, Amber Montgomery, Jeremiah Young, Amir Davis, Whitney Young, Noah Davis, and Ericka Manning; one great-grandchild, one brother, Odia (Libby Jean) Davis;, a sister-in-law, Diane G. Davis; honorary sister, Delsenia Murchinson; and a host of nieces, nephews, and other family and friends.

*Obituary for Jessie Mae Clark*

Jessie Mae Burrell Clark, daughter of the late Clyde and Ruth Burell was born October 28, 1950, in Florence South Carolina. She departed from this life on July 15, 2021. She was affectionately known as "Shorty" by many whose lives she touched.

She acknowledged our LORD JESUS CHRIST as her personal Savior on January 13, 2002, and united with a membership of First Baptist Church Campostella. She worked for many years in customer service. She was a friendly cashier at M&M Grocery in Miami, Florida where she never met a stranger. She retired from the Norfolk City Public Schools where she served as food service personnel.

Her brothers Clyde Jr, Nathan, and Charles; sisters, Ruby, Dorothy, Rachel, Virginia, Roberta, and Solean preceded her in death.

Jessie leaves to cherish her memory of her loving husband Joe Clark Jr; two sons, Arden Burell and Joe (Naeeta) Clark III; 10 grandchildren, 2 great-grandchildren, and a host of nieces and nephews and friends.

*Obituary for Heyward Michael “Mike” Black*

A Celebration of Life for Michael Black will be held at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, July 24, 2021, at Ideal Funeral Parlor. He departed this life on Wednesday, July 14, 2021, after an illness.

Michael was born in Florence County, SC, the son of Joseph and Darleitha Black. He attended the public schools of Florence County and graduated from Wilson High School in 1977. He furthered his education at the University of South Carolina before leaving school to take over his father’s business; Black’s Electric Service. Michael was a Master Electrician for over 42 years serving the Pee Dee and coastal regions.

Michael grew up a member of Antioch Baptist Church as a child and spent some of his adult years at Savannah Grove Baptist Church.

Michael leaves to cherish his memory his former spouse, Paula Black, and their four children, Courtney D. Black of Florence, SC, Brittney M. Black of Jacksonville, FL, Michael J. Black (Kara) of Washington, DC, and Paul Gabriel Black (Kianté) of Columbia, SC.

He is also survived by his three siblings, Eddie(Jeanne) Black of Bowie, MD, Robert B. Black, and Joyce A. Black of Florence, SC; his beloved grandchildren, Aaron M. Black, Bria N. Williams, Noah G. Black, Lauren E. Black, and Jordan D. Black; Aunts, Rachel W. Mansfield, Sarah M. Fisher, Mary W. Parker, Cassie (Randy) Ruger, and Barbara Washington; Uncles, James C. (Viola) Washington, Booker T. Washington and Rev. George (Garcia) Washington and a host of nieces, nephews, relatives, and friends.
