Allen Men Dominates in Javelin While Placing in Shot Put and 100 Meters

All-Conference freshman Jhyrique Mangum led the Allen men in the Shot Put on Thursday on Day One of the SIAC Track & Field Conference Championships in Atlanta. The men finished in 9th place out of 13 schools with 24 points and scored well in the Shot Put, Javelin, Long Jump, 100 meters, and the relay team. AU was just 11 points out of the top 7 in their first year competing in the Div. II SIAC Championships

Mangum finished 4th overall in the Shot Put Finals on Thursday with a mark of 13.9 meters which is nearly a 46 foot throw. He earned 5 team points for the Yellow Jackets. Junior Sheldon Brown then earned one team point as he placed 8th with a throw of 13 meters (42 ft), a season-high, while senior Isaiah Milhouse came in right behind Brown in 9th overall out of 30 in the event with a throw of 12.7 meters.

Junior Montrell White then placed 7th overall in the Long Jump earning two team points with a mark of 6.47 meters (21.2 ft) and is pictured above. Freshman teammate Zalyn Myers also finished 18th in the Long jump out of 30 competitors with a jump of 6.2 meters (20.4 ft).

In the Javelin Finals on Saturday morning, freshman Cecilius Bailey set a new season-high throw of 46 meters (151 ft) to place 4th overall and earn five team points. Brown then finished right behind Bailey in 5th place overall with a season-best throw of 44.2 meters to earn 4 team points for the Jackets. Preston Conner also competed and threw a mark of 28 meters to place 21st out of 30.

The 4x100 meter relay team also qualified in 7th place out of 13 teams after the Prelims on Thursday with a time of 42.34 seconds featuring M. White, Z. Myers, and freshmen Rolik Jackson and Jabari Moss, who ran the opening leg. During the finals on Saturday, Allen also finished in 7th place running a time of 42.3 seconds as Myers ran the final leg to earn two team points.

During the track prelim events on day two, Allen was led by Myers who ran a season-best qualifying time of 10.69 seconds in the 100 meters to qualify in 4th while White was 11th with a time of 11 seconds. Rolik Jackson was also 20th in the qualifier in 11.2 seconds.

Then, in the 100 meter finals on Saturday, Myers ran a time of 10.9 seconds to finish 4th overall and earn five team points for the Yellow Jackets.

On Friday in the field events, the men competed in the Hammer throw and Discus from Morehouse College in Atlanta.

In the Hammer, Allen fell just one spot short of earning a team point in the top 8 as Sheldon Brown placed 9th overall out of 21 competitors with a throw of 34.3 meters (112 ft) just missing the top 8 by .5 meters. Also placing for the Jackets was Milhouse coming in 12th (2nd in his heat) at 32.6 meters while Mangum was 15th with a throw of 29.9 meters (98 ft).

In the Discus, Brown and Milhouse led the way by placing 12th and 13th respectively out of 30 competitors. Brown won his heat with a throw of 36.9 meters (121 ft) while Milhouse's throw was 36.4 meters, but both Jackets failed to get into the top 8 for team points. Mangum also competed but fouled out.

In the High Jump, Edmond Whitaker finished in a tie for 12th with a mark of 1.7 meters (5.7 ft).

The Yellow Jackets also had two sprinters finish inside the top 15 after the prelims of the 200 Meters. Myers came in 12th after a time of 22.6 seconds while White is right behind in 14th in 22.7 seconds but unfortunately, neither qualified for the finals.

Then, in the 800 meters, senior Daquan Brock ran a qualifying time of 2:14 in the 800 meters to finish 20th while Moss ran a quality time in the 400 meter hurdles in 57.2 seconds to currently sit in 10th place. In the 400 meters, Brock ran a non-qualifying time to come in 24th place with a time of 54.1 seconds while Moss was 26th in 54.4 seconds.
