SCSU Graduate Spotlight: A Sit Down with Graduate Semira Fields

South Carolina State's recent graduate, Semira Fields, became one of the top hitters on the 2022 Lady Bulldog Volleyball Team. She led the team in kills (104) and was second in blocks (21.0). Semira was also a leader off the court. We had a chance to reconnect with Semira and have a one-on-one conversation about her journey and how she landed at SC State.

Q: What has your experience been like here at SC State?

A: My experience here at SC State has been nothing short of amazing, although State doesn't have the facilities like the major universities around the country but just like any HBCU, It teaches you a lot about life. The lesson I learned was that you don't have to have the best things to complete the same goal as the next person, it's all about grit.

Q: What are your plans after graduation?

A: My plan after graduation is to get into an Accelerated Bachelor of Science in Nursing program and further my education after that and become a Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetists.

Q: What is your greatest accomplishment here at SC State on and off the court?

A: My greatest accomplishments on the court was earning MVP my first season here, and as far as off the court, taking 22 hours in one semester to assure that I graduate on time.

Q: What is your favorite thing to do besides volleyball?

A: My few favorite things to do besides volleyball are workout, try new foods or food in general, have fun in any type of water -- whether that be the pool, beach, or tubing -- and just relax.

Q: What is your favorite food?

A: My favorite food is Injera, it's a cultural dish from my mom's country called Eritrea, it's a small country in East Africa.

Q: What is one interesting thing about you that most people do not know?

A: An interesting fact about me is that I can speak German fluently.

Q: Who is the most influential person or persons in your life?

A: My mom is the most influential person in my life. She moved to America when she was 24 and taught herself English, took care of two young children while my dad was deployed in Afghanistan. She made sure she set us up to have the best life/opportunities, and education possible.

Q: Why did you choose South Carolina State?

A: I chose SCSU because they took a chance on me, after media coverage of players being cut by coach at Grambling volleyball, they took me in and treated me like family.

Q: What is your most memorable moment as a student at SC State?

The most memorable moment at SC State as a student would have to be graduation…I could finally breathe. and It felt really nice to be able to stand as they called the first-generation graduates.

Q: Who is your favorite celebrity or professional athlete?

A: I personally don't have a favorite celebrity or professional athlete.

Q: What is your favorite song that describes you as a person and athlete?

A: I'd say bad mornings…NBA Youngboy describes me because he expresses how he can't quit, at all, and that he's not hurt, at all. And, his pain makes him grow and I feel like I can relate to that.

Q: What is a quote or motto that you live by?

A: "Life goes on" because, at the end of the day, it's the end of the day and life does not wait on nobody. It goes on."
